Hand & Foot is the North American cousin of Canasta, played by four players in two partnerships with five full decks — 270 cards in all. Every player holds two piles: the hand you play first, and a face-down foot you only touch once your hand is gone. Build melds of a kind, complete seven-card books, grab the top of the discard pile, and be the first team to play every card from both piles.

Here you can play Hand & Foot online free, straight from the browser: hit Quick Play to join a table in seconds, or create a room and share its code to play with friends. Deals are scored exactly like the classic rules — clean books 500, dirty books 300, wild books 1,500, red threes — and a match is four deals with the highest total winning.

Hand & Foot in a nutshell

Four players, two partnerships, 270 cards (five decks including ten jokers). Each player is dealt a hand of 11 cards plus a face-down foot of 11. On your turn draw two cards from the stock — or take the top seven cards of the discard pile — then meld sets of equal-ranked cards and discard one. When your hand is empty you pick up your foot and keep going. A seven-card meld is a book: 500 points clean, 300 dirty, 1,500 for a book of pure wilds. To go out your team needs a clean book, a dirty book and a partner already playing from their foot (+100). Four deals are played; the highest total wins.

Frequently asked questions

How many cards are used in Hand & Foot?

Five 52-card decks plus the ten jokers they come with — 270 cards in all (one more deck than players is the classic ratio).

How many players play Hand & Foot?

It is best for four players in two fixed partnerships, partners sitting opposite each other.

How many cards are dealt to each player?

Two piles of eleven: a hand of 11 cards you play first, and a face-down foot of 11 cards you only touch once the hand is gone.

What is a book in Hand & Foot?

A completed meld of exactly seven cards of the same rank. A clean book has no wild cards and scores 500, a dirty book contains wilds and scores 300, and a book of pure wild cards scores 1,500.

How many wild cards can a meld contain?

At most half as many as natural cards: one wild in a three-card meld, two in a five- to seven-card meld. A meld of only twos and jokers is also legal.

How do you pick up the discard pile?

The top card must not be a three. You must hold two natural cards matching its rank (two wilds if the top is wild), and you must immediately meld them together with the top card. You take the top seven cards of the pile.

What do red threes score?

100 points each — plus if your team melded during the deal, minus if it never did. Red threes stuck in an unopened foot count against you like any leftover card.

What does a black three do?

Discarding one stops the next player from taking the discard pile. Black threes can never be melded.

How do you pick up your foot?

Either meld your entire hand and pick up the foot at once, or meld all but one card and discard the last — the foot opens at the start of your next turn.

How do you go out in Hand & Foot?

Your team needs at least one clean book and one dirty book, and your partner must already be playing from their foot. Then play every card from your foot (with an optional final discard) for a 100-point bonus.

How long is a game of Hand & Foot?

A match is four deals, each with a higher minimum meld requirement: 50, 90, 120 and 150 points. The highest total after four deals wins.
